A monkey entered a power substation in Sri Lanka, causing power outages across the island.

The power outage began at around 11:30 am (06:00 GMT), and the supply was not fully restored after more than three hours, due to the monkey entering the station.

Power Minister Kumara Jayakody told reporters, "A monkey entered a transformer on our network, causing a malfunction in the system," noting that the incident occurred in a suburb south of the capital, Colombo.

While power has been restored in some areas, it was not immediately clear how long the outage will last, and the minister said, "Engineers are working to try to restore service as soon as possible."

A rat had disrupted Sri Lankan flights for three days last year, as it was grounded for fear of gnawing on sensitive components. A Sri Lankan airline official said that "the plane was grounded for three days in Colombo" and was unable to "return to the airspace before confirming the rat was found", noting that the small animal was found dead.
