Cameroon's President Paul Biya, the oldest head of state in the world, is 92, after more than 4 decades in power, while he has not yet announced his intention to run for an eighth term later this year.

Paul Biya has ruled Cameroon since 1982 when he won the elections for the first time, and in the last elections in 2018, he strengthened his grip on power and refrained from choosing a successor, and talk about who will replace him remains taboo.

While the government has officially banned local media from discussing his health, rumors about his health have been circulating since the president disappeared from public view for weeks last year, prompting the authorities to issue a statement saying that Biya was in Switzerland, where he used to spend long vacations in luxury resorts.

“My determination to serve you remains unshakable and grows stronger every day given the magnitude of the challenges we face,” Biya said in his year-end address.

In January, Cameroon’s traditional leaders expressed their “full and unwavering” support for him.
